Luke 21:12-19
Your endurance will win you your lives
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Men will seize you and persecute you; they will hand you over to the synagogues and to imprisonment, and bring you before kings and governors because of my name – and that will be your opportunity to bear witness. Keep this carefully in mind: you are not to prepare your defence, because I myself shall give you an eloquence and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to resist or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, relations and friends; and some of you will be put to death. You will be hated by all men on account of my name, but not a hair of your head will be lost. Your endurance will win you your lives.’
Reflection
This passage presents a paradox that lies at the heart of Christian faith: in the midst of persecution and suffering, Jesus promises protection and victory. He doesn't shield his followers from hardship—he warns them explicitly of arrest, betrayal, and death. Yet he also assures them that nothing can truly be lost. The promise "not a hair of your head will be lost" alongside "some of you will be put to death" suggests that Jesus speaks of a deeper, spiritual preservation that transcends physical harm. Our true lives—our eternal selves—cannot be destroyed by those who can only kill the body. The call to endurance is not passive resignation but active trust, and in that trust, we find our ultimate security.
Question for Reflection
When have you experienced opposition or difficulty because of your faith? What does it mean to you that Jesus promises protection not from hardship, but through it? How might your understanding of "winning your life" differ from the world's definition of victory?
Prayer
Lord, give us courage when we face resistance for following you. Help us to trust that you are with us in every trial, and that our deepest lives are held securely in your hands. Free us from fear of what others can do to us, and teach us to endure with hope, knowing that in you, we are never truly lost. May our witness to your love be strong and true. Amen.
