Luke 1:57-66
'His name is John'
The time came for Elizabeth to have her child, and she gave birth to a son; and when her neighbours and relations heard that the Lord had shown her so great a kindness, they shared her joy.
Now on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; they were going to call him Zechariah after his father, but his mother spoke up. ‘No,’ she said ‘he is to be called John.’ They said to her, ‘But no one in your family has that name’, and made signs to his father to find out what he wanted him called. The father asked for a writing-tablet and wrote, ‘His name is John.’ And they were all astonished. At that instant his power of speech returned and he spoke and praised God. All their neighbours were filled with awe and the whole affair was talked about throughout the hill country of Judaea. All those who heard of it treasured it in their hearts. ‘What will this child turn out to be?’ they wondered. And indeed the hand of the Lord was with him.
Short Reflection
This passage celebrates the moment when faithful obedience breaks a long silence and confirms God's promise. The birth of John is a community event, but the naming becomes a profound act of witness. Elizabeth, defying tradition, insists on the name given by the angel. When the crowd turns to Zechariah, his simple written declaration, "His name is John," is an act of recovered faith. In that moment of obedience, his tongue is loosed, and his first words are praise. This sequence is powerful: obedience to God's word unlocks our voice for worship. The miracle leaves the community in awe, pondering God's mysterious plan. The child, set apart from his very name, is marked by the hand of the Lord, showing that God's purpose often begins in ways that defy human expectation and demand faithful cooperation.
Question for Reflection
Is there a specific "name" or calling God has placed on my life that requires my faithful obedience to confirm, even if it goes against conventional expectation?
Short Prayer
Lord God, you break the silence of our doubt with the power of your promise. Give me the courage of Elizabeth to stand on your word and the faithfulness of Zechariah to obey, even when it seems unconventional. Unlock my lips to praise you, that all may see your hand at work in my life and wonder at your plans. Amen.
