Gospel
Matthew 11:28-30
My yoke is easy and my burden light
Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest. Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light.’
Short Reflection
In a world that demands constant productivity and self-sufficiency, these words of Jesus are a profound relief. He does not offer a simplistic escape from life's labors and burdens, but a radical exchange. He invites us to replace the crushing, solitary yoke of our own expectations, anxieties, and sins with his yoke. A yoke is a tool for shared work, and Jesus promises to pull with us. His yoke is "easy" not because it demands nothing, but because it is fitted perfectly for our souls by a Master who is "gentle and humble in heart." The rest he promises is not the absence of work, but the deep, soul-level peace that comes from walking in step with him.
Question for Reflection
What heavy yoke—of worry, perfectionism, or sin—am I carrying alone that I need to exchange for the light and easy yoke of Christ's grace and companionship?
Short Prayer
Lord Jesus, you see the burdens that weigh heavily on my soul. I bring them to you now. Free me from the yoke of my own making, and help me to shoulder your yoke instead. Teach me your gentle and humble ways, that I may find true rest for my soul in you. Amen.
