Gospel
Luke 1:46-56
The Almighty has done great things for me
Mary said:
‘My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord
and my spirit exults in God my saviour;
because he has looked upon his lowly handmaid.
Yes, from this day forward all generations will call me blessed,
for the Almighty has done great things for me.
Holy is his name,
and his mercy reaches from age to age for those who fear him.
He has shown the power of his arm,
he has routed the proud of heart.
He has pulled down princes from their thrones and exalted the lowly.
The hungry he has filled with good things, the rich sent empty away.
He has come to the help of Israel his servant, mindful of his mercy
– according to the promise he made to our ancestors –
of his mercy to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.’
Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months and then went back home.
Short Reflection
The Magnificat is a revolutionary song of praise that reveals the heart of God and His plan for the world. Mary, a humble young woman, becomes the voice for this divine overturning of the world's values. Her song is not merely a personal thanksgiving, but a prophetic declaration of how God's kingdom operates: He scatters the proud, dethrones the powerful, lifts up the lowly, and satisfies the hungry. The "great things" God has done for her are a microcosm of the great things He intends to do for all humanity through the child she carries. Her soul's proclamation teaches us that true greatness lies in humble surrender to God's will, and that His mercy is the most powerful force in history, destined to fill the world through Christ.
Question for Reflection
In what areas of my life and society do I see the need for God's transformative justice, and how can I, like Mary, become an instrument of His mercy and lifting power?
Short Prayer
My soul proclaims your greatness, O Lord, and my spirit rejoices in you, my Savior. You who look with favor upon the lowly, fill my heart with the same faith and courage that overflowed from Mary. Make me an instrument of your mercy and a witness to the great things you do for those who trust in you. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
