The leprosy left the man at once, and he was cured

A leper came to Jesus and pleaded on his knees: ‘If you want to’ he said ‘you can cure me.’ Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him. ‘Of course I want to!’ he said. ‘Be cured!’ And the leprosy left him at once and he was cured. Jesus immediately sent him away and sternly ordered him, ‘Mind you say nothing to anyone, but go and show yourself to the priest, and make the offering for your healing prescribed by Moses as evidence of your recovery.’ The man went away, but then started talking about it freely and telling the story everywhere, so that Jesus could no longer go openly into any town, but had to stay outside in places where nobody lived. Even so, people from all around would come to him.

Reflection

In this encounter, Jesus shows profound compassion by touching the untouchable—a leper, isolated and despised by society. His words, “Of course I want to!” reveal a heart full of mercy and eagerness to heal, not reluctance. Yet, even after receiving this miraculous cure, the man disobeys Jesus’ clear instruction to remain silent. His spreading of the news, though born from gratitude, forces Jesus into greater isolation. This reminds us that God’s mercy is freely given, but our response to it matters—obedience flows from true gratitude, while excitement without restraint can sometimes hinder God’s wider purpose.

Question for Reflection

When have I experienced God’s mercy or healing in my life, and how did I respond—did I obey His guidance quietly, or did I act impulsively in my excitement?

Prayer

Lord Jesus,

Thank You for Your compassion that reaches out to touch the broken and unclean parts of my life.

Heal me where I need Your mercy most, and give me the grace to respond with humble obedience.

Help me to trust Your timing and ways, even when my heart overflows with gratitude.

May my life give witness to Your love in the way that most glorifies You.
