Mark 4:35-41
'Even the wind and the sea obey him'
With the coming of evening, Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Let us cross over to the other side.’ And leaving the crowd behind they took him, just as he was, in the boat; and there were other boats with him. Then it began to blow a gale and the waves were breaking into the boat so that it was almost swamped. But he was in the stern, his head on the cushion, asleep. They woke him and said to him, ‘Master, do you not care? We are going down!’ And he woke up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Quiet now! Be calm!’ And the wind dropped, and all was calm again. Then he said to them, ‘Why are you so frightened? How is it that you have no faith?’ They were filled with awe and said to one another, ‘Who can this be? Even the wind and the sea obey him.’
Reflection
In this powerful scene, we witness Jesus' authority over creation itself. The disciples, experienced fishermen who knew the dangers of the sea, found themselves completely overwhelmed by the storm. Yet Jesus slept peacefully through it all—not from indifference, but from perfect trust in his Father. When awakened, he didn't frantically bail water or grab an oar; he simply spoke, and nature obeyed.
The disciples' question, "Who can this be?" echoes through the centuries. This moment revealed something profound about Jesus' identity—he possessed divine authority over the natural world. But perhaps more importantly for us, it reveals something about faith: it's not the absence of storms, but the presence of Christ in our boat that makes the difference. The disciples' fear was understandable, yet Jesus gently challenged them to trust more deeply, even when circumstances seemed dire and he appeared to be sleeping.
Question for Reflection
When have I experienced a "storm" in my life where God seemed to be asleep or absent? How might Jesus be inviting me to deeper faith in those moments when I can't see or feel his presence?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you are master of wind and wave, yet you also know our human fears. When the storms of life threaten to overwhelm me, help me to remember that you are present in my boat, even when you seem silent or asleep. Give me the faith to trust in your power and your love, especially when I cannot see the way forward. Calm the storms that rage within my heart, and teach me to rest in your peace. Amen.
