Gospel of John 4:5–16, 19–26, 39–42:
Jesus came to the Samaritan town of Sychar, near the land Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Tired from his journey, he sat by Jacob’s well at about noon. A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said, “Give me a drink.” His disciples had gone into town to buy food.
Surprised, the woman said, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan, for a drink?” For Jews did not associate with Samaritans.
Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God and who is asking you, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
She said, “Sir, you have no bucket and the well is deep. Are you greater than our father Jacob who gave us this well?”
Jesus replied, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give will never thirst. The water I give will become a spring within, welling up to eternal life.”
The woman said, “Sir, give me this water.” Then she added, “I see you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say Jerusalem is the place to worship.”
Jesus said, “The hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. True worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. God is spirit, and those who worship must worship in spirit and truth.”
The woman said, “I know that the Messiah is coming.” Jesus replied, “I who am speaking to you am he.”
Many Samaritans believed because of the woman’s testimony. When they met Jesus and heard him for themselves, they said, “We know that he truly is the Savior of the world.”
Reflection
Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at the well, crossing boundaries of culture and expectation to offer living water—the gift of eternal life. In a moment of ordinary thirst, the ordinary becomes holy: revelation breaks through, trust grows, and a community begins to awaken to who Jesus is. The invitation remains the same: drink deeply from what only He can give, and worship in spirit and truth, beyond places and labels.
Reflection Question
- How might I welcome Jesus’ living water into my everyday moments and let it transform my relationships with others whom I might initially overlook or judge?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for meeting me in the ordinary and offering living water that satisfies. Help me to drink deeply of Your grace, to worship You in spirit and truth, and to see every person as worthy of Your love. Enable me to extend the mercy and welcome I have received to those around me. Amen.
