The Good fish

The fishermen collect the good fish and throw away those that are no use

Jesus said to the crowds: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet cast into the sea that brings in a haul of all kinds. When it is full, the fishermen haul it ashore; then, sitting down, they collect the good ones in a basket and throw away those that are no use. This is how it will be at the end of time: the angels will appear and separate the wicked from the just to throw them into the blazing furnace where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.
    ‘Have you understood all this?’ They said, ‘Yes.’ And he said to them, ‘Well then, every scribe who becomes a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out from his storeroom things both new and old.’
    When Jesus had finished these parables he left the district.

Reflection 

The parable invites us to consider two realities side by side: the abundance of grace gathered by God and the judgment that sorts what lasts from what perish. Like the net that pulls in “all kinds” of fish, the kingdom welcomes every kind of person and every circumstance of our lives. Yet not everything is of value in God’s eyes; there is a call to discernment, conversion, and ultimate alignment with what is good, true, and just. The concluding verse about new and old things in the storeroom reminds us that discipleship calls us to hold fast to both the fresh revelations of Jesus and the enduring wisdom of the faith. The Gospel invites a posture of humility: trust in God’s mercy, while allowing God’s light to expose what needs transformation in us.

- We are invited to trust in God’s expansive grace that gathers all people.
- There is a sober reminder of judgment and the need for ongoing conversion.
- Discipleship involves a lifelong fidelity to both old truths and new revelations in Christ.
- The image of sorting compels us to pursue what endures—love, justice, mercy—in daily life.
- Jesus speaks plainly, inviting a receptive response: understanding leads to following.

Prayer

Loving God, thank you for gathering us into your kingdom with boundless mercy. Help me to respond with humility, to seek what endures in love and justice, and to allow your light to transform my heart. May I hold fast to your truth while remaining open to the new ways you speak to me through Christ. Guard me from judgment that hardens, and guide me to live as a faithful witness to your grace. Through Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
