Luke 9:18-22
'You are the Christ of God'
One day when Jesus was praying alone in the presence of his disciples he put this question to them, ‘Who do the crowds say I am?’ And they answered, ‘John the Baptist; others Elijah; and others say one of the ancient prophets come back to life.’ ‘But you,’ he said ‘who do you say I am?’ It was Peter who spoke up. ‘The Christ of God’ he said. But he gave them strict orders not to tell anyone anything about this.
‘The Son of Man’ he said ‘is destined to suffer grievously, to be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes and to be put to death, and to be raised up on the third day.’
Reflection
In this passage, Jesus moves the conversation from public opinion to personal conviction. While the crowds see Him through the lens of history—as John the Baptist or Elijah—Peter recognizes His true identity: "The Christ of God." However, Jesus immediately clarifies that His messiahship is not defined by worldly power, but by the paradox of suffering, rejection, and resurrection. To follow the Christ is to embrace the whole truth of who He is—not just the miracle worker, but the Suffering Servant who conquers death through sacrifice. We are called to move beyond hearsay to a personal, transformative encounter with the Savior.

Beyond what you have been taught by others or what society says, who do you personally say Jesus is in the context of your own life and struggles?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for revealing Your true identity to us. Help me to not just know about You, but to truly know You. Grant me the courage to follow You, even when the path involves sacrifice, trusting always in the power of Your resurrection. Amen.
