Gospel
John 1:47-51
You will see heaven laid open, and the Son of Man
When Jesus saw Nathanael coming he said of him, ‘There is an Israelite who deserves the name, incapable of deceit.’ ‘How do you know me?’ said Nathanael. ‘Before Philip came to call you,’ said Jesus ‘I saw you under the fig tree.’ Nathanael answered, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the King of Israel.’ Jesus replied, ‘You believe that just because I said: I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.’ And then he added ‘I tell you most solemnly, you will see heaven laid open and, above the Son of Man, the angels of God ascending and descending.’
Reflection
After speaking long ago to our ancestors “in many ways and at many times” through the voice of his prophets, God now speaks to us by his Son (Hebrews 1:1). Even Nathanael’s encounter with God’s revelation in Jesus was but a glimpse of a greater revelation to come. This revelation was gradually given to the apostles and is now fully revealed in the complete work of Jesus through his death and resurrection. Phillip also known as nathaneal saw the glory of God through death and ressurection of Christ and the birth of Christ.
Let us pray
Lord Jesus you have shown your greatness to Phillip. May we too find the greatness and joy by being part of you .
Amen
