Luke 17:20-25
The kingdom of God is among you
Asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was to come, Jesus gave them this answer, ‘The coming of the kingdom of God does not admit of observation and there will be no one to say, “Look here! Look there!” For, you must know, the kingdom of God is among you.’
He said to the disciples, ‘A time will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man and will not see it. They will say to you, “Look there!” or, “Look here!” Make no move; do not set off in pursuit; for as the lightning flashing from one part of heaven lights up the other, so will be the Son of Man when his day comes. But first he must suffer grievously and be rejected by this generation.’
Short Reflection
In this passage, Jesus redirects a fundamental human and religious question: "When?" The Pharisees are looking for a timetable, a visible political or cosmic event. Jesus' answer is startling. He says the Kingdom of God is not a future event to be observed but a present reality to be discerned. "The kingdom of God is among you." It is already present in the person of Jesus himself—in his teaching, his healing, and his very presence among them.
Then, turning to his disciples, he warns against the very thing the Pharisees were doing: seeking signs and chasing after rumors of the Messiah. The final coming of the Son of Man will be as unmistakable and universal as lightning flashing across the sky. But before that public triumph, there is a necessary, hidden suffering. The path to glory leads directly through the Cross. This reminds us that God's kingdom often operates in a hidden, paradoxical way, growing in the quiet soil of faithful hearts and often revealed most clearly in acts of love, service, and sacrifice.
Question for Reflection
Where can I recognize the quiet, present reality of God's kingdom "among" me today—in the people I meet, the circumstances I face, or the inner stirrings of my own heart—rather than looking for a more dramatic, distant sign?
Short Prayer
Lord Jesus, you are the Kingdom of God in our midst. Open the eyes of our hearts to recognize your presence with us here and now. When we are tempted to look elsewhere for signs and wonders, ground us in the reality of your love. Give us the courage to embrace the way of the Cross, trusting that through patient endurance and faith, your glory will be revealed in its full and unmistakable light. Amen.
