Gospel
John 3:31-36
The Father loves the Son and has entrusted everything to him
John the Baptist said to his disciples:
‘He who comes from above is above all others;
he who is born of the earth is earthly himself
and speaks in an earthly way.
He who comes from heaven
bears witness to the things he has seen and heard,
even if his testimony is not accepted;
though all who do accept his testimony
are attesting the truthfulness of God,
since he whom God has sent
speaks God’s own words:
God gives him the Spirit without reserve.
The Father loves the Son
and has entrusted everything to him.
Anyone who believes in the Son has eternal life,
but anyone who refuses to believe in the Son will never see life:
the anger of God stays on him.’
Reflection
This passage highlights the unique authority and divine origin of Jesus. John the Baptist contrasts himself—earthly and limited—with Jesus, who "comes from above" and is "above all others." Jesus speaks with the authority of heaven, bearing witness to what He has seen and heard from God, even though many do not accept His testimony357. Those who do accept Him affirm that God is truthful, for Jesus speaks God's own words and receives the Spirit without measure146.
The heart of the message is the relationship between the Father and the Son: "The Father loves the Son and has entrusted everything to him." Belief in Jesus leads to eternal life, while rejection results in remaining under God's judgment467. This underscores both the gift and the responsibility that comes with hearing the words of Christ.
Question for Reflection:
How open am I to accepting Jesus’ testimony and allowing His words to guide my life, knowing that belief in Him is the path to eternal life?
Short Prayer
Lord Jesus, You come from above and speak the words of God. Help me to receive Your testimony with faith and trust in Your love. Fill me with Your Spirit, and guide me to live in the light of Your truth. Grant me the grace to believe in You always, that I may share in the eternal life You promise. Amen.
