Gospel
John 3:16-21
God sent his Son into the world so that through him the world might be saved
Jesus said to Nicodemus:
‘God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son,
so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost
but may have eternal life.
For God sent his Son into the world
not to condemn the world,
but so that through him the world might be saved.
No one who believes in him will be condemned;
but whoever refuses to believe is condemned already,
because he has refused to believe in the name of God’s only Son.
On these grounds is sentence pronounced:
that though the light has come into the world
men have shown they prefer darkness to the light
because their deeds were evil.
And indeed, everybody who does wrong
hates the light and avoids it,
for fear his actions should be exposed;
but the man who lives by the truth comes out into the light,
so that it may be plainly seen that what he does is done in God.’
Reflection
This passage reveals the heart of the Gospel: God’s immense love for the world is shown by the gift of His only Son, Jesus, so that all who believe in Him may have eternal life and not be lost46. Jesus was sent not to condemn, but to save—a radical message that emphasizes mercy over judgment9. The text also highlights a choice: to embrace the light of Christ or to remain in darkness. Those who believe step into the light, allowing their lives to be transformed and their deeds to be seen as works done in God. Those who reject the light do so because they fear exposure of their wrongdoing, preferring darkness instead
Question for Reflection:
Do I welcome the light of Christ into every part of my life, or are there areas I keep hidden out of fear or shame?
Short Prayer
Loving God, thank You for sending Your Son to bring me eternal life. Help me to trust in Your love, to walk in Your light, and to live in a way that honors You. Give me courage to let go of darkness and to let Your truth shine in all I do. Amen.
