Gospel
John 13:31-33,34-35
In the Son of Man, God has been glorified
When Judas had gone Jesus said:
‘Now has the Son of Man been glorified,
and in him God has been glorified.
If God has been glorified in him,
God will in turn glorify him in himself,
and will glorify him very soon.
‘My little children,
I shall not be with you much longer.
I give you a new commandment:
love one another;
just as I have loved you,
you also must love one another.
By this love you have for one another,
everyone will know that you are my disciples.’
Reflection
In this Gospel, Jesus speaks to his disciples just after Judas leaves to betray him. Despite knowing what lies ahead-his suffering and death-Jesus focuses not on fear or anger, but on glory: “Now has the Son of Man been glorified, and in him God has been glorified.” The cross, a symbol of suffering, becomes the place where God's love and glory are revealed most fully135.
Jesus then gives his disciples a new commandment: to love one another as he has loved them. This love is not just a feeling, but a self-giving, sacrificial love that mirrors Jesus’ own actions. It is by this love that others will recognize them as his followers135.
As we reflect, we are reminded that our faith is not shown by words or rituals alone, but by the genuine love we show to others, especially in difficult times.
Question for reflection:
How can I show Christ-like love to someone in my life today, especially when it is difficult?
Short Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You showed us the depth of your love even in the face of betrayal and suffering. Help me to love others as you have loved me-selflessly, patiently, and with a generous heart. May my actions reveal your presence to those around me. Amen9.
