Gospel
John 15:12-17
What I command you is to love one another
Jesus said to his disciples:
‘This is my commandment:
love one another,
as I have loved you.
A man can have no greater love
than to lay down his life for his friends.
You are my friends,
if you do what I command you.
I shall not call you servants any more,
because a servant does not know
his master’s business;
I call you friends,
because I have made known to you
everything I have learnt from my Father.
You did not choose me:
no, I chose you;
and I commissioned you
to go out and to bear fruit,
fruit that will last;
and then the Father will give you
anything you ask him in my name.
What I command you is to love one another.’
Reflection
In John 15:12-17, Jesus emphasizes the profound nature of love, urging His disciples to love one another as He loves them. This love is not merely an emotion but a commitment that can involve great sacrifice, as seen in His willingness to lay down His life. By calling His disciples "friends," Jesus invites them into a deeper relationship, one based on trust and mutual understanding. He reminds them that they are chosen and commissioned to bear lasting fruit, which reflects their love for one another and for Him.
This passage challenges us to consider how we embody this commandment in our daily lives. Are we willing to love selflessly, even when it requires sacrifice? How do we nurture relationships that reflect the friendship Jesus offers us? As we ponder these questions, let us remember that our actions can have a lasting impact on those around us.
Question for Reflection:
How can I better express love to those around me in a way that reflects the love Jesus has shown me?
Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus,
Thank You for calling us Your friends and for showing us the depth of Your love. Help us to embody this love in our relationships with others. Teach us to be selfless and to bear fruit that lasts. May we reflect Your kindness and compassion in all we do. Strengthen us to love one another as You have loved us. Amen.
