Gospel
John 13:16-20
Whoever welcomes the one I send welcomes me
After he had washed the feet of his disciples, Jesus said to them:
‘I tell you most solemnly,
no servant is greater than his master,
no messenger is greater than the man who sent him.
‘Now that you know this, happiness will be yours if you behave accordingly. I am not speaking about all of you: I know the ones I have chosen; but what scripture says must be fulfilled: Someone who shares my table rebels against me.
‘I tell you this now, before it happens,
so that when it does happen
you may believe that I am He.
I tell you most solemnly,
whoever welcomes the one I send welcomes me,
and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.’
Reflection:**
In this passage, Jesus reminds his disciples of the humility and service that should define their lives. By washing their feet, Jesus exemplifies the true nature of leadership — one rooted in service and love. His words, "no servant is greater than his master," challenge us to examine our attitudes toward those we serve and those who serve us. When we welcome others, especially those sent by God, we embrace Christ himself. Jesus forewarns of betrayal, yet he also offers reassurance that recognizing and welcoming his messengers is tantamount to welcoming him and the Father. This passage calls us to humility, openness, and a readiness to serve others as a sign of our love for Christ.
Question for Reflection:
How am I called to serve others in my daily life, especially those whom I may find difficult to love or accept?
Short Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for the example of Jesus, who humbled himself to serve others. Help me to follow his footsteps with a willing heart and a humble spirit. Teach me to welcome those you send into my life, recognizing in them your presence. May my actions reflect your love, and may I always be mindful of the importance of service and humility. Amen.
