Gospel
John 14:27-31
A peace the world cannot give is my gift to you
Jesus said to his disciples:
‘Peace I bequeath to you, my own peace I give you,
a peace the world cannot give,
this is my gift to you.
Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.
You heard me say: I am going away, and shall return.
If you loved me you would have been glad to know that I am going to the Father,
for the Father is greater than I.
I have told you this now before it happens,
so that when it does happen you may believe.
I shall not talk with you any longer,
because the prince of this world is on his way.
He has no power over me,
but the world must be brought to know
that I love the Father
and that I am doing exactly what the Father told me.’
Reflection
Jesus offers his disciples a profound gift: his peace, a peace that surpasses anything the world can provide. This peace is not mere absence of conflict but a deep, abiding assurance rooted in trust in God’s presence and purpose. Jesus acknowledges the challenges his disciples will face—his departure, the influence of the "prince of this world"—yet he urges them not to be troubled or afraid. His words remind us that true peace comes from aligning our hearts with God’s will, trusting in His plan even amidst uncertainty. Jesus’ obedience to the Father, even in the face of trials, becomes our example. By embracing his peace, we are invited to let go of fear and live with courage and faith.
Question for Reflection: How can I open my heart to receive Jesus’ gift of peace in the midst of my current fears or uncertainties?
Prayer
Loving Jesus, you offer us your peace, a gift that calms troubled hearts and casts out fear. Help us to trust in your presence and to follow your example of obedience to the Father’s will. Fill us with your peace that surpasses understanding, and guide us to share it with the world. We ask this in your holy name. Amen.
