Matthew 8:23-27
Jesus rebuked the winds and the seas, and all was calm
Jesus got into the boat followed by his disciples. Without warning a storm broke over the lake, so violent that the waves were breaking right over the boat. But he was asleep. So they went to him and woke him saying, ‘Save us, Lord, we are going down!’ And he said to them, ‘Why are you so frightened, you men of little faith?’ And with that he stood up and rebuked the winds and the sea; and all was calm again. The men were astounded and said, ‘Whatever kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey him.’
Reflection
In this passage, we witness Jesus’ profound authority over nature itself. The storm on the lake represents the chaos and fears that often arise in our lives unexpectedly. Despite the turmoil, Jesus remains peacefully asleep, showing his trust in the Father’s plan. When the disciples wake Him in panic, He gently rebukes their fear and lack of faith. His calming of the storm reveals that no matter how fierce the challenges we face, Jesus has the power to bring peace and calm. This story invites us to trust in His presence and sovereignty, even when we feel overwhelmed.
Question for reflection:
When storms rage in your life, how do you respond? Do you turn to Jesus in faith, trusting that He can calm the chaos?
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You calm the storms that threaten to overwhelm us. Help me to trust in Your power and presence, especially when fear and uncertainty arise. Teach me to have faith like the disciples are called to have, knowing that You are always with me, ready to bring peace to my troubled heart. Calm my fears and strengthen my trust in You today and always.
Amen.
