Gospel
John 17:11-19
Father, keep those you have given me true to your name
Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said:
‘Holy Father,
keep those you have given me true to your name,
so that they may be one like us.
While I was with them,
I kept those you had given me true to your name.
I have watched over them
and not one is lost
except the one who chose to be lost,
and this was to fulfil the scriptures.
But now I am coming to you
and while still in the world I say these things
to share my joy with them to the full.
I passed your word on to them,
and the world hated them,
because they belong to the world
no more than I belong to the world.
I am not asking you to remove them from the world,
but to protect them from the evil one.
They do not belong to the world
any more than I belong to the world.
Consecrate them in the truth;
your word is truth.
As you sent me into the world,
I have sent them into the world,
and for their sake I consecrate myself
so that they too may be consecrated in truth.’
Reflection:
In this passage from John 17:11-19, Jesus prays for His disciples, asking the Father to keep them faithful and united in His name. He emphasizes the importance of their being protected from evil and being consecrated in truth through God's Word. Jesus’ prayer reveals His deep love and concern for His followers, not just for their salvation but for their ongoing sanctification and unity. It reminds us that, as followers of Christ, we are called to remain rooted in God's truth, to be united in love, and to trust in His protection amidst a world that may oppose our faith. Jesus’ words challenge us to reflect on how we stay faithful and united in our journey with Him, especially in times of trial.
Question for reflection:
How can I deepen my connection to God's truth and foster unity with others in my daily life?
Short prayer based on this Gospel:**
Holy Father,
thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus, who intercedes for us and prays for our protection and unity.
Help me to remain rooted in Your truth and to be a witness of Your love in the world.
Guard me from evil and strengthen my faith, so that I may live in harmony with others and fulfill Your purpose for my life.
May I be consecrated in Your Word and reflect the love of Christ in all I do.
Amen.
