Matthew 7:21-29
The wise man built his house on a rock
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘It is not those who say to me, “Lord, Lord,” who will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the person who does the will of my Father in heaven. When the day comes many will say to me, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, cast out demons in your name, work many miracles in your name?” Then I shall tell them to their faces: I have never known you; away from me, you evil men!
‘Therefore, everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on rock. Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and hurled themselves against that house, and it did not fall: it was founded on rock. But everyone who listens to these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a stupid man who built his house on sand. Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and struck that house, and it fell; and what a fall it had!’
Jesus had now finished what he wanted to say, and his teaching made a deep impression on the people because he taught them with authority, and not like their own scribes.
**Reflection:**
This passage from Matthew reminds us that true faith is demonstrated through our actions and obedience to God's word, not merely by words or outward appearances. Jesus emphasizes that listening alone is not enough; we must put His teachings into practice. Building our lives on the foundation of His words, like the wise man building on rock, provides stability and strength in times of trial. Conversely, neglecting His instructions leaves us vulnerable to the storms of life, which can cause everything to fall apart. As followers of Christ, we are called to reflect on what foundation we are building our lives upon. Are we acting on His teachings daily, or are we simply hearing without doing?
**Question for Reflection:**
How can I ensure that I am not only listening to Jesus’ words but also actively applying them in my daily life?
**Short Prayer:**
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word that guides and sustains us. Help me to be a doer of Your teachings, building my life on the solid foundation of Christ’s love and truth. Strengthen me to act with faith and obedience, especially when the storms of life come. May my actions reflect Your will, and may I always find my hope and security in You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
