Matthew 16:13-19
You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi he put this question to his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say he is John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ ‘But you,’ he said ‘who do you say I am?’ Then Simon Peter spoke up, ‘You are the Christ,’ he said ‘the Son of the living God.’ Jesus replied, ‘Simon son of Jonah, you are a happy man! Because it was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you but my Father in heaven. So I now say to you: You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church. And the gates of the underworld can never hold out against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven.’
**Reflection:**
In this Gospel passage, Jesus asks His disciples who people say He is, highlighting the importance of recognizing His true identity. When Peter boldly declares, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,” Jesus affirms Peter’s faith and reveals that this understanding comes from divine revelation. Jesus then establishes Peter’s role as the foundation of His Church, giving him the keys of the kingdom and the authority to bind and loose. This passage reminds us that true faith is a gift from God, and when we recognize Jesus as the Christ, we become part of His divine plan. It challenges us to reflect on our own understanding of Jesus and to consider how we are called to build His Church through faith and love.
**Question for reflection:**
How am I called to be a foundational part of Christ’s Church through my faith and actions?
**Short Prayer:**
Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Your Son, Jesus Christ, to us as the true and living God. Just as Peter was called to build Your Church on faith, help me to deepen my trust in Jesus and to live out my faith boldly. Grant me the grace to recognize Your divine truth in my life, and empower me to be a faithful member of Your Church. May I always seek Your guidance and be a beacon of Your love to others. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
