Gospel
Matthew 5:38-42
Offer the wicked man no resistance
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You have learnt how it was said: Eye for eye and tooth for tooth. But I say this to you: offer the wicked man no resistance. On the contrary, if anyone hits you on the right cheek, offer him the other as well; if a man takes you to law and would have your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone orders you to go one mile, go two miles with him. Give to anyone who asks, and if anyone wants to borrow, do not turn away.’
**Reflection:**
In this passage from Matthew, Jesus challenges us to move beyond the conventional understanding of justice and retaliation. Instead of responding to evil with revenge, He calls us to embody compassion, generosity, and non-resistance. Offering the other cheek, giving more than what is asked, and going the extra mile are acts of radical love that reflect the heart of the Gospel. These actions require humility and trust in God's justice, trusting that true righteousness lies not in retribution but in mercy and selflessness. As followers of Christ, we are invited to practice forgiveness and kindness, even when it’s difficult, trusting that love can transform hearts and situations.
**Reflection question:**
How can I practice non-resistance and radical generosity in my daily life, especially when I face opposition or injustice?
**Short Prayer:**
Heavenly Father, teach me to respond with love rather than retaliation. Fill my heart with Your compassion and patience, so I may offer kindness even to those who hurt me. Help me to trust in Your justice and to reflect Your mercy in all my actions. May my life be a witness of Your radical love. Amen.
