Matthew 11:20-24
It will not go as hard with Sodom on Judgement Day as with you
Jesus began to reproach the towns in which most of his miracles had been worked, because they refused to repent.
‘Alas for you, Chorazin! Alas for you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. And still, I tell you that it will not go as hard on Judgement day with Tyre and Sidon as with you. And as for you, Capernaum, did you want to be exalted as high as heaven? You shall be thrown down to hell. For if the miracles done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have been standing yet. And still, I tell you that it will not go as hard with the land of Sodom on Judgement day as with you.’
Reflection:
This passage from Matthew reminds us of the importance of recognizing and responding to God's presence and miracles in our lives. Jesus gently rebukes the towns that witnessed His miracles but failed to repent and change their ways. Their rejection of God's grace led to a harsher judgment than that of ancient cities like Sodom, which, despite their sins, had a chance to repent. It challenges us to reflect on how we respond to God's invitation and the blessings we receive. Are we open-hearted and willing to turn towards Him, or do we take His grace for granted? The message calls us to examine our own lives and to ask: Are we truly receptive to God's work in us?
**Question for reflection:**
How am I responding to the ways God is calling me to repentance and transformation in my daily life?
**Short Prayer:**
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your patience and love, even when we fail to respond to Your grace. Help us to recognize Your miracles in our lives and to be moved to repent and turn towards You with sincere hearts. May we not take Your blessings for granted, but instead, open ourselves fully to Your transforming power. Guide us to live in humility and gratitude, so that on the Day of Judgment, we may stand firm in Your mercy. Amen.
