Gospel
Matthew 12:14-21
He cured them all but warned them not to make him known
The Pharisees went out and began to plot against Jesus, discussing how to destroy him.
Jesus knew this and withdrew from the district. Many followed him and he cured them all, but warned them not to make him known. This was to fulfil the prophecy of Isaiah:
Here is my servant whom I have chosen,
my beloved, the favourite of my soul.
I will endow him with my spirit,
and he will proclaim the true faith to the nations.
He will not brawl or shout,
nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets.
He will not break the crushed reed,
nor put out the smouldering wick
till he has led the truth to victory:
in his name the nations will put their hope.
Reflection on Matthew 12:14-21
In this Gospel passage, we see Jesus withdrawing from conflict with the Pharisees, who seek to destroy him, yet he continues his mission of healing and compassion. Despite his power, Jesus chooses humility and gentleness, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy of a servant who does not shout or break the crushed reed. His quiet strength and care for the broken reveal a Messiah who leads not through force but through love and truth, inviting all nations to place their hope in him. This challenges us to reflect on how we respond to opposition or brokenness in our own lives—do we act with patience and compassion, or do we seek to dominate and control?
Question for Reflection: How can I embody Jesus’ gentle strength in my interactions with others, especially those who are hurting or oppose me?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you are the chosen servant, filled with God’s Spirit, bringing healing and hope to all. Teach us to follow your example of humility and compassion, to lift up the broken, and to proclaim your truth with gentle hearts. Guide us to place our hope in you and to share your love with the world. Amen.
