Matthew 10:16-23
The Spirit of your Father will be speaking in you
Jesus instructed the Twelve as follows: ‘Remember, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; so be cunning as serpents and yet as harmless as doves.
‘Beware of men: they will hand you over to sanhedrins and scourge you in their synagogues. You will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the pagans. But when they hand you over, do not worry about how to speak or what to say; what you are to say will be given to you when the time comes; because it is not you who will be speaking; the Spirit of your Father will be speaking in you. ‘Brother will betray brother to death, and the father his child; children will rise against their parents and have them put to death. You will be hated by all men on account of my name; but the man who stands firm to the end will be saved. If they persecute you in one town, take refuge in the next; and if they persecute you in that, take refuge in another. I tell you solemnly, you will not have gone the round of the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.’
Reflection on Matthew 10:16-23
In this passage, Jesus prepares His disciples for the challenges they will face as His witnesses in a hostile world. He calls them to be both wise and innocent—"cunning as serpents and harmless as doves." This balance reminds us that living a faithful life requires discernment and purity of heart. Jesus warns of betrayal, persecution, and rejection, yet He assures His followers that they will not be left alone. The Spirit of the Father will speak through them, guiding their words and strengthening their witness. This promise invites us to trust deeply in the Holy Spirit’s presence in our own lives, especially when we face difficulties for living out our faith.
Question for Reflection:
In what ways can I cultivate both wisdom and innocence in my daily walk with Christ, trusting the Spirit to guide me through challenges?
Prayer Based on Matthew 10:16-23
Loving Father,
Thank You for sending Your Spirit to be our guide and strength. Help me to be wise and discerning like the serpent, yet gentle and pure like the dove. When I face trials or opposition for living Your truth, fill me with courage and peace. Teach me to rely not on my own words, but on Your Spirit speaking through me. May I stand firm in faith until the end, trusting in Your saving grace.
Amen.
