Matthew 16:24-28
Anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me. For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it. What, then, will a man gain if he wins the whole world and ruins his life? Or what has a man to offer in exchange for his life?
‘For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and, when he does, he will reward each one according to his behaviour. I tell you solemnly, there are some of these standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming with his kingdom.’
Reflection on Matthew 16:24-28
In this passage, Jesus calls us to a radical way of living—one that demands self-denial, sacrifice, and wholehearted commitment. To “take up one’s cross” means embracing the challenges and sufferings that come with following Him, trusting that in losing our life for His sake, we actually find true and lasting life. The world may offer many things, but these pale in comparison to the value of the soul and the eternal reward promised by the Son of Man. Jesus reminds us that earthly gains are fleeting, but faithfulness to Him leads to eternal glory. This challenges us to examine our priorities: Are we clinging to worldly success at the expense of our spiritual well-being?
Question for Reflection:
What am I holding onto that might be preventing me from fully following Jesus and embracing the life He offers?
Prayer Based on Matthew 16:24-28
Lord Jesus,
Help me to renounce my selfish desires and take up my cross with courage and faith. Teach me to trust that losing my life for Your sake is the path to true life. Strengthen me to follow You faithfully, even when the way is difficult, and keep my eyes fixed on the eternal reward You promise. May I find joy in serving You and live each day in the hope of Your coming kingdom.
Amen.
