Matthew 10:1-7
'Go to the lost sheep of the House of Israel'
Jesus summoned his twelve disciples, and gave them authority over unclean spirits with power to cast them out and to cure all kinds of diseases and sickness.
These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, the one who was to betray him. These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them as follows:
‘Do not turn your steps to pagan territory, and do not enter any Samaritan town; go rather to the lost sheep of the House of Israel. And as you go, proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.’
Reflection on Matthew 10:1-7
In this passage, Jesus empowers His twelve disciples with authority over unclean spirits and the ability to heal all diseases, sending them specifically to the "lost sheep of the House of Israel." This mission highlights Jesus’ initial focus on restoring and renewing His own people, the Israelites, as a foundation for the broader mission to the world. The disciples are called not only to heal physically but also to proclaim the nearness of the kingdom of heaven, inviting people into a transformative relationship with God.
This passage challenges us to consider where we are called to serve and how we can be instruments of healing and proclamation in our own communities. It reminds us that the mission begins with those closest to us—our families, friends, and neighbors—before it extends outward. Jesus’ instruction to avoid pagan and Samaritan territories at this stage also teaches us about the importance of timing and obedience in our spiritual journeys.
Question for Reflection:
In what ways am I being called to bring healing and the message of God’s kingdom to those closest to me?
Prayer Based on Matthew 10:1-7
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the example of Jesus who empowers us to bring healing and hope to those around us. Grant me the courage and wisdom to recognize the people You place in my life who need Your love and mercy. Help me to proclaim Your kingdom not only in words but through my actions, showing compassion and faithfulness. May I be obedient to Your call, trusting in Your timing and guidance as I serve those near to me.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
