Matthew 9:18-26
'Your faith has restored you to health'
While Jesus was speaking, up came one of the officials, who bowed low in front of him and said, ‘My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her and her life will be saved.’ Jesus rose and, with his disciples, followed him. Then from behind him came a woman, who had suffered from a haemorrhage for twelve years, and she touched the fringe of his cloak, for she said to herself, ‘If I can only touch his cloak I shall be well again.’ Jesus turned round and saw her; and he said to her, ‘Courage, my daughter, your faith has restored you to health.’ And from that moment the woman was well again.
When Jesus reached the official’s house and saw the flute-players, with the crowd making a commotion he said, ‘Get out of here; the little girl is not dead, she is asleep.’ And they laughed at him. But when the people had been turned out he went inside and took the little girl by the hand; and she stood up. And the news spread all round the countryside.
Reflection on Matthew 9:18-26
In this passage, we witness two powerful acts of faith—one from a desperate father and another from a woman who had suffered for twelve long years. Both come to Jesus with deep trust: the official believes that Jesus’ touch can bring life to his dead daughter, and the woman believes that simply touching Jesus’ cloak will heal her. Jesus acknowledges their faith and responds with compassion, restoring health and life.
This story reminds us that faith is not just belief but a confident trust in Jesus’ power and mercy, even when situations seem hopeless. It encourages us to approach Jesus boldly, knowing that He sees our needs and responds with love. It also challenges us to reflect on our own faith—do we trust Jesus enough to bring our deepest fears and hopes to Him?
Question for Reflection:
In what areas of your life do you need to trust Jesus more deeply, believing that He can bring healing and new life?
Prayer Based on Matthew 9:18-26
Loving and compassionate Jesus,
You see our struggles and hear our prayers, even when hope feels lost.
Help us to approach You with the same faith as the official and the woman,
Trusting that Your power can restore what is broken and bring life where there is despair.
Give us courage to reach out to You in our need,
And fill us with peace as we wait for Your healing touch.
May our faith grow stronger each day,
And may we always remember Your boundless mercy and love.
Amen.
