Gospel
Luke 9:57-62
'I will follow you wherever you go'
As Jesus and his disciples travelled along they met a man on the road who said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’ Jesus answered, ‘Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’
Another to whom he said, ‘Follow me’, replied, ‘Let me go and bury my father first.’ But he answered, ‘Leave the dead to bury their dead; your duty is to go and spread the news of the kingdom of God.’
Another said, ‘I will follow you, sir, but first let me go and say goodbye to my people at home.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Once the hand is laid on the plough, no one who looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.’
This passage from Luke challenges us to consider the cost and commitment of discipleship. Jesus calls for wholehearted dedication, warning that following Him means accepting uncertainty, urgency, and an uncompromising focus on God's kingdom, without distractions or delays.
Reflection
Following Jesus means trusting Him above all else, even when it means leaving behind the familiar comforts and delaying important personal matters. True discipleship calls for courage to let go of anything that hinders our mission and to keep our eyes fixed firmly on the path ahead. Our loyalty must be constant and unwavering, like a hand steady on the plough.
Question for Reflection
What comforts or distractions might I need to leave behind to follow Jesus more closely and wholeheartedly?
Prayer
Lord, help me to embrace your call with courage and faith. Teach me to trust You above all else and to follow without hesitation, keeping my focus on Your kingdom. Strengthen my heart when the road is uncertain, and guide me to live as Your faithful disciple each day. Amen.
