Gospel
Luke 17:11-19
No-one has come back to praise God, only this foreigner
On the way to Jerusalem Jesus travelled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered one of the villages, ten lepers came to meet him. They stood some way off and called to him, ‘Jesus! Master! Take pity on us.’ When he saw them he said, ‘Go and show yourselves to the priests.’ Now as they were going away they were cleansed. Finding himself cured, one of them turned back praising God at the top of his voice and threw himself at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. The man was a Samaritan. This made Jesus say, ‘Were not all ten made clean? The other nine, where are they? It seems that no one has come back to give praise to God, except this foreigner.’ And he said to the man, ‘Stand up and go on your way. Your faith has saved you.’
Short Reflection
This story is a powerful lesson in the difference between receiving a blessing and receiving salvation. All ten lepers received the healing they desperately asked for. They had enough faith to cry out and to obey Jesus' command to go to the priests. Yet, only one—a double outcast, both a leper and a despised Samaritan—understood that the true miracle was not just the cleansing of his body, but the presence of God in the person of Jesus. His return, loudly praising God and humbly thanking Jesus, demonstrates a faith that goes beyond mere petition to a relationship of grateful worship. Jesus points out that while all were "cleansed," only this man, whose faith was expressed in gratitude, was "saved." His physical healing became a gateway to a much deeper, spiritual wholeness.
Question for Reflection
Where in my life am I like the nine, quickly accepting God's gifts and moving on, and where am I like the one, turning back to offer heartfelt thanks? What blessing have I received recently that I have failed to properly praise God for?
Short Prayer
Lord Jesus, you are the source of every good gift. Open my eyes to see your hand at work in my life, and awaken my heart to gratitude. Help me not to simply receive your blessings and go on my way, but to constantly return to you in praise. May my thankfulness be the sign of a saving faith that finds its rest in you alone. Amen.
