Gospel
Luke 17:7-10
You are merely servants
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Which of you, with a servant ploughing or minding sheep, would say to him when he returned from the fields, “Come and have your meal immediately”? Would he not be more likely to say, “Get my supper laid; make yourself tidy and wait on me while I eat and drink. You can eat and drink yourself afterwards”? Must he be grateful to the servant for doing what he was told? So with you: when you have done all you have been told to do, say, “We are merely servants: we have done no more than our duty.”’
Reflection on Luke 17:7-10
The parable of the master and the servant is stark and unsettling. It paints a clear picture: a servant does not earn special thanks or immediate comfort for merely doing what is required of him. His duty is his duty.
Jesus applies this directly to his disciples, and by extension, to us. When we serve God—whether through prayer, acts of charity, following the commandments, or fulfilling our vocations—we are not accumulating merit that entitles us to divine praise or immediate spiritual reward. Our service is not a transaction. Instead, it is the fundamental duty and privilege of a believer.
The key takeaway is a call to humility and disinterested service. The moment we begin to think, "Look how much I have done for God," or expect recognition for our righteousness, we misunderstand our role. When we've done our very best, our proper attitude should be: "We are merely servants: we have done no more than our duty." This perspective frees us from pride and teaches us to serve out of love and obedience, not for the sake of reward or applause. It reminds us that everything we have—our ability to serve, our time, and our very lives—is a gift from God.
Question for Reflection
In what areas of your life or service do you find yourself subtly seeking recognition, praise, or a sense of entitlement for your efforts, and how can you shift your focus to serving purely out of duty and love for God?
Short Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Grant us the grace to remember that we are merely servants. Help us to embrace humility, to perform our duties faithfully, and to serve others without seeking reward or applause. May our greatest joy be simply in doing Your will, knowing that our truest reward is You.
Amen
