Gospel
Luke 2:36-40
Anna speaks of the child to all who looked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem
There was a prophetess, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was well on in years. Her days of girlhood over, she had been married for seven years before becoming a widow. She was now eighty-four years old and never left the Temple, serving God night and day with fasting and prayer. She came by just at that moment and began to praise God; and she spoke of the child to all who looked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem.
When they had done everything the Law of the Lord required, they went back to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. Meanwhile the child grew to maturity, and he was filled with wisdom; and God’s favour was with him.
Short Reflection
Anna completes the prophetic witness in the Temple, representing a life wholly dedicated to God in prayer and expectation. While Simeon's encounter was intimate and focused, Anna's response is outward and missionary. After a lifetime of waiting, her immediate reaction to seeing the child is to praise God and to "speak of the child to all who looked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem." She becomes the first evangelist of the Gospel, proclaiming the arrival of the Messiah to the faithful remnant. Her story teaches us that a life of faithful prayer and patient waiting finds its ultimate fulfillment in bearing witness to Christ. The passage then concludes with the quiet, hidden growth of Jesus in Nazareth, reminding us that God's great work often begins in obscurity, nurtured in the ordinary context of family and faithful community.
Question for Reflection
Does my life of prayer and worship naturally overflow into sharing the hope of Christ with others who are also seeking God's redemption?
Short Prayer
O God of Anna and Simeon, you reward a lifetime of patient prayer with the joy of your presence. Grant me the perseverance to seek you in prayer and worship. Fill my heart with such gratitude for the gift of your Son, that I, like Anna, cannot help but speak of him to all who hope for your salvation. Amen.
