Matthew 9:27-31
'Take care that no-one learns about this'
As Jesus went on his way two blind men followed him shouting, ‘Take pity on us, Son of David.’ And when Jesus reached the house the blind men came up with him and he said to them, ‘Do you believe I can do this?’ They said, ‘Sir, we do.’ Then he touched their eyes saying, ‘Your faith deserves it, so let this be done for you.’ And their sight returned. Then Jesus sternly warned them, ‘Take care that no one learns about this.’ But when they had gone, they talked about him all over the countryside.
Short Reflection
This passage reveals a beautiful and paradoxical moment in Jesus' ministry. The healing is granted not as a magic trick, but as a direct response to the blind men's persistent and confident faith. They see who Jesus truly is—the "Son of David"—even without physical sight. Yet, immediately after the miracle, Jesus gives a surprising command: secrecy. This "Messianic Secret" highlights that Jesus' mission is not about public spectacle or fame, but about a deeper, more personal revelation of God's power. The men's inability to remain silent, while disobedient, also speaks to the irresistible nature of such a profound encounter. True faith, once ignited, naturally wants to bear witness, even if imperfectly.
Question for Reflection
Is my faith in Jesus persistent and personal, like the blind men who followed him into the house, and do I share the story of his work in my life for the right reasons—to glorify God?
Short Prayer
Lord Jesus, you are the Son of David, the one who brings light to our darkness. Touch our hearts with the same faith that heals and saves. Help us to follow you persistently and to share the good news of your mercy, not for our own glory, but as a witness to your loving power. Amen.
