Matthew 21:23-27
'I will not tell you my authority for acting like this'
Jesus had gone into the Temple and was teaching, when the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him and said, ‘What authority have you for acting like this? And who gave you this authority?’ ‘And I’ replied Jesus ‘will ask you a question, only one; if you tell me the answer to it, I will then tell you my authority for acting like this. John’s baptism: where did it come from: heaven or man?’ And they argued it out this way among themselves, ‘If we say from heaven, he will retort, “Then why did you refuse to believe him?”; but if we say from man, we have the people to fear, for they all hold that John was a prophet.’ So their reply to Jesus was, ‘We do not know.’ And he retorted, ‘Nor will I tell you my authority for acting like this.’
Short Reflection
This passage reveals a clash not of intellect, but of integrity. The religious leaders approach Jesus not with a genuine desire to understand, but with a trap meant to undermine His authority. Jesus, perceiving their dishonesty, responds with a question that exposes the true state of their hearts. Their dilemma is not a lack of information, but a refusal to commit to the truth they already know. They calculate the political and social consequences of each answer, choosing the cowardly "We do not know" to protect their own position. Jesus' refusal to answer reveals a profound spiritual principle: God does not unveil the depths of His truth to those who are more concerned with self-preservation than with genuine faith.
Question for Reflection
Are there areas in my spiritual life where I am avoiding a clear commitment to the truth because I fear the consequences or the cost of discipleship?
Short Prayer
Lord of Truth, save me from a calculating faith that seeks safety over sincerity. Give me the courage to acknowledge what I know to be true about you, even when it is difficult or costly. May my heart be so open and honest before you that I am always worthy of receiving your revelation. Amen.
