Matthew 10:17-22
The Spirit of your Father will be speaking in you
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Beware of men: they will hand you over to sanhedrins and scourge you in their synagogues. You will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the pagans. But when they hand you over, do not worry about how to speak or what to say; what you are to say will be given to you when the time comes; because it is not you who will be speaking; the Spirit of your Father will be speaking in you.
‘Brother will betray brother to death, and the father his child; children will rise against their parents and have them put to death. You will be hated by all men on account of my name; but the man who stands firm to the end will be saved.’
Short Reflection
In this sobering passage, Jesus offers his disciples a starkly realistic picture of the cost of discipleship. He does not promise a life of ease, but warns of opposition, betrayal, and persecution. Yet, at the heart of this warning lies a profound and comforting promise: they will not face these trials alone or relying on their own strength. When human resources fail and words escape them, "the Spirit of your Father will be speaking in you." This is the ultimate source of a Christian's courage—not a plan of their own making, but a divine presence that empowers their witness. The call is not to avoid suffering, but to "stand firm to the end," trusting that the faithful God who promises the Spirit's help in the struggle will also grant the final salvation.
Question for Reflection
When faced with opposition or anxiety about bearing witness to my faith, do I rely on my own preparations, or do I trust in the promise that the Holy Spirit will give me the words and courage I need?
Short Prayer
Lord Jesus, you told us the truth about the cost of following you. In moments of fear or persecution, help me to remember your promise. Send your Holy Spirit to be my strength and my speech. Grant me the courage to stand firm in my witness, trusting that you are with me to the very end. Amen.
