Gospel
Matthew 18:12-14
The one lost sheep gives him more joy than the ninety-nine that did not stray
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Tell me. Suppose a man has a hundred sheep and one of them strays; will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hillside and go in search of the stray? I tell you solemnly, if he finds it, it gives him more joy than do the ninety-nine that did not stray at all. Similarly, it is never the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should be lost.’
Short Reflection
This parable reveals the astonishing, personal love of God. In a world that often values efficiency and the majority, God's economy is different. The ninety-nine are safe, but His heart is drawn to the one who is lost. This is not because the others are unloved, but because His love is so profound that it focuses with immense intensity on the one in peril. The joy over the one rescued sheep is a window into the heart of heaven—a joy that erupts over a single sinner who repents. It assures us that no one is just a number to God. We are all known by name, and His will is relentlessly set on our return and salvation.
Question for Reflection
When have I experienced myself as the one lost sheep, and how can I extend this same patient, seeking love to others who feel lost or on the margins?
Short Prayer
Good Shepherd, your love for me is personal and relentless. Thank you for never giving up on me when I stray. Give me a heart like yours, that I may never dismiss another as insignificant, but always share in your joy when the lost are found. Amen.
