Matthew 7:21,24-27
The wise man built his house on a rock
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘It is not those who say to me, “Lord, Lord,” who will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the person who does the will of my Father in heaven. Therefore, everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on rock. Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and hurled themselves against that house, and it did not fall: it was founded on rock. But everyone who listens to these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a stupid man who built his house on sand. Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and struck that house, and it fell; and what a fall it had!’
Short Reflection
This passage draws a powerful and urgent distinction between hearing and doing. Jesus makes it clear that verbal allegiance—calling Him "Lord"—is not enough. True discipleship is found in the difficult, daily work of aligning our actions with God's will. Building on rock is not a single decision but a lifelong process of laying a foundation through prayer, obedience, and concrete acts of love, mercy, and justice. When the inevitable storms of life arrive—crisis, doubt, or suffering—it is this foundation of lived faith, not just professed belief, that will keep us standing.
Question for Reflection
Where in my life am I building on "sand"—hearing God's word but failing to act on it—and where am I building on "rock" through faithful, practical obedience?
Short Prayer
Lord Jesus, your words are the rock upon which we stand. Give us the wisdom not only to listen to your teaching but the courage and strength to put it into practice. Build our lives on the firm foundation of your will, so that when the storms come, our faith in you will not fall. Amen.
