Gospel
Luke 4:14-22
'This text is being fulfilled today, even as you listen'
Jesus, with the power of the Spirit in him, returned to Galilee; and his reputation spread throughout the countryside. He taught in their synagogues and everyone praised him.
He came to Nazara, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day as he usually did. He stood up to read and they handed him the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. Unrolling the scroll he found the place where it is written:
The spirit of the Lord has been given to me,
for he has anointed me.
He has sent me to bring the good news to the poor,
to proclaim liberty to captives
and to the blind new sight,
to set the downtrodden free,
to proclaim the Lord’s year of favour.
He then rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the assistant and sat down. And all eyes in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to speak to them, ‘This text is being fulfilled today even as you listen.’ And he won the approval of all, and they were astonished by the gracious words that came from his lips.
Reflection
In this passage, Jesus returns to Nazareth, His hometown, and reads from Isaiah in the synagogue. By proclaiming, “This text is being fulfilled today even as you listen,” He boldly identifies Himself as the promised Messiah. The words He reads speak of liberation, healing, and God’s favor—a mission rooted in compassion and justice.
This moment invites us to consider how Jesus’ mission continues through us today. The “poor,” “captives,” “blind,” and “downtrodden” are not only those in physical need but also those spiritually and emotionally burdened. Jesus’ message is one of active hope—a call to participate in bringing God’s healing and freedom to the world.
We too are anointed by the Holy Spirit in baptism to be bearers of good news. When we show kindness, stand for justice, or offer comfort, we help fulfill this ancient promise in our own time. Let us listen, as the synagogue did, with open hearts, ready to be part of God’s unfolding work of love.
Question for Reflection
In what specific ways can I, through the Holy Spirit’s guidance, bring “good news” to someone in my life who feels poor, captive, blind, or downtrodden today?
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You read the words of the prophet and declared them fulfilled in Your presence.
Anoint us with Your Spirit, that we may continue Your mission of mercy and liberation.
Help us to see those in need, to listen with compassion, and to act with courage.
May our lives, like Yours, become a living fulfillment of Your promise of freedom, sight, and favor.
Amen.
