Gospel
Mark 1:21-28
Unlike the scribes, he taught them with authority
Jesus and his disciples went as far as Capernaum, and as soon as the sabbath came he went to the synagogue and began to teach. And his teaching made a deep impression on them because, unlike the scribes, he taught them with authority.
In their synagogue just then there was a man possessed by an unclean spirit and it shouted, ‘What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God.’ But Jesus said sharply, ‘Be quiet! Come out of him!’ And the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and with a loud cry went out of him. The people were so astonished that they started asking each other what it all meant. ‘Here is a teaching that is new’ they said ‘and with authority behind it: he gives orders even to unclean spirits and they obey him.’ And his reputation rapidly spread everywhere, through all the surrounding Galilean countryside.
Short Reflection
In this passage from Mark's Gospel, Jesus enters the synagogue in Capernaum and teaches not with borrowed opinions or endless citations, like the scribes, but with an authority that comes directly from God. His words carry divine power, and this is immediately demonstrated when he confronts and expels an unclean spirit with a simple command. The people are astonished: this is not mere teaching—it is a revelation of God's kingdom breaking into the world, where even evil forces must obey the Holy One. Jesus' authority is not about control or domination, but about setting people free and restoring them to wholeness.
Question for Reflection
Where in my life do I experience voices or forces—fear, addiction, resentment, or despair—that seem to "possess" or limit me? Am I willing to bring these before Jesus, trusting that his authoritative word can speak freedom and healing into those places?
Short Prayer
Lord Jesus, Holy One of God,
you teach with authority and command even the powers of darkness to flee.
Come into the hidden places of my heart where unclean spirits linger,
silence them with your powerful word, and set me free to live fully in your light.
May your authority reign in me today.
Amen.
