Gospel
Matthew 4:12-17
He went and settled in Capernaum: in this way the prophecy of Isaiah was fulfilled
Hearing that John had been arrested, Jesus went back to Galilee, and leaving Nazareth he went and settled in Capernaum, a lakeside town on the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali. In this way the prophecy of Isaiah was to be fulfilled:
‘Land of Zebulun! Land of Naphtali!
Way of the sea on the far side of Jordan,
Galilee of the nations!
The people that lived in darkness has seen a great light;
on those who dwell in the land and shadow of death
a light has dawned.’
From that moment Jesus began his preaching with the message, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.’
Reflection
Jesus begins his public ministry not in Jerusalem's temple or among the elite, but in Galilee—a region looked down upon, a place of mixed peoples and darkness. Yet it is precisely here that the light dawns. This reminds us that God's kingdom breaks into our world not where we expect it, but often in the overlooked places, the margins, the ordinary corners of life. Jesus's message is urgent and hopeful: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand." This isn't a call to fear, but an invitation to turn toward the light that has already arrived, to reorient our lives toward the presence of God among us.
Question for Reflection
Where in my life do I experience "darkness" or feel marginalized? How might Jesus be inviting me to see his light breaking into precisely those places?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you chose to dwell among the ordinary and the overlooked. Help me to recognize your presence in the unexpected places of my life. Give me the courage to turn toward your light, to repent of the ways I have turned away from you, and to embrace the nearness of your kingdom. May I become a bearer of your light to others who dwell in darkness. Amen.
