Gospel
Mark 4:26-34
The kingdom of God is a mustard seed growing into the biggest shrub of all
Jesus said to the crowds: ‘This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man throws seed on the land. Night and day, while he sleeps, when he is awake, the seed is sprouting and growing; how, he does not know. Of its own accord the land produces first the shoot, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the crop is ready, he loses no time: he starts to reap because the harvest has come.’
He also said, ‘What can we say the kingdom of God is like? What parable can we find for it? It is like a mustard seed which at the time of its sowing in the soil is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet once it is sown it grows into the biggest shrub of them all and puts out big branches so that the birds of the air can shelter in its shade.’
Using many parables like these, he spoke the word to them, so far as they were capable of understanding it. He would not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything to his disciples when they were alone.
Reflection
Jesus uses two agricultural images to reveal something profound about God's kingdom: it grows mysteriously and abundantly beyond our control or understanding. Like a farmer who plants seed without knowing exactly how germination works, we participate in God's kingdom without fully grasping its inner workings. The mustard seed parable reminds us that what seems insignificant—a tiny seed, a small act of faith, a simple gesture of love—can grow into something that provides shelter and blessing for many others.
These parables invite us to trust in the quiet, often invisible work of God. The kingdom doesn't depend on our striving or our full comprehension. It grows "of its own accord," through God's power at work in ways we cannot see. Our calling is to plant seeds faithfully and wait with hope, trusting that God will bring the harvest in His time.
Question for Reflection
What "mustard seed" of faith or love might God be calling you to plant today, even if it seems small or insignificant? Where do you need to trust more deeply in God's mysterious work rather than trying to control the outcome?
Prayer
Loving God, You are the Lord of growth and abundance. Help me to trust in Your kingdom's hidden work within me and around me. Give me patience to wait for Your timing and courage to plant seeds of faith, even when I cannot see how they will grow. May my small acts of love become shelter for others, all through Your grace. Amen.
