Gospel
Mark 6:30-34
They were like sheep without a shepherd
The apostles rejoined Jesus and told him all they had done and taught. Then he said to them, ‘You must come away to some lonely place all by yourselves and rest for a while’; for there were so many coming and going that the apostles had no time even to eat. So they went off in a boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves. But people saw them going, and many could guess where; and from every town they all hurried to the place on foot and reached it before them. So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he set himself to teach them at some length.
Reflection
Jesus, seeking rest with his disciples, encounters a crowd desperate for guidance. Instead of turning away, he sees them with compassion, recognizing their spiritual hunger—they are lost, “like sheep without a shepherd.” In our busy lives, we also long for direction and meaning. Jesus responds not with miracles first, but with teaching, offering the nourishment of truth. This reminds us that true compassion meets others where they are, offering presence and wisdom even when we ourselves are weary.
Question
Where in your life are you being called to offer guidance or compassion, even when you feel in need of rest?
Prayer
Shepherd of our hearts,
when I am weary,
help me to see the needs before me.
Teach me to lead with compassion,
and to trust that in giving,
I too am fed.
Amen.
