Gospel
Matthew 9:14-15
When the bridegroom is taken from them, then they will fast
John’s disciples came to Jesus and said, ‘Why is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not?’ Jesus replied, ‘Surely the bridegroom’s attendants would never think of mourning as long as the bridegroom is still with them? But the time will come for the bridegroom to be taken away from them, and then they will fast.’
Reflection
Jesus presents himself as the bridegroom, bringing a new era of divine presence and joy. Fasting, a sign of mourning or longing, is inappropriate while he is physically present. His coming fulfills the old patterns of devotion. Yet he foreshadows his passion—a time when he will be “taken away.” Then fasting will find its meaning: an expression of longing for his return and of shared sorrow over his absence. This passage invites us to discern the seasons of God’s work—knowing when to feast in Christ’s presence and when to fast in hopeful anticipation.
Question
In what areas of my life is Jesus inviting me to feast in his presence rather than hold onto old patterns of religion?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, Bridegroom of our souls, help us to rejoice in your living presence today. Teach us to fast with purpose when we long for your return, and to celebrate the salvation you have brought. May our lives always reflect the season of your grace. Amen.
