Gospel
John 3:1-8
Unless a man is born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God
There was one of the Pharisees called Nicodemus, a leading Jew, who came to Jesus by night and said, ‘Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who comes from God; for no one could perform the signs that you do unless God were with him.’ Jesus answered:
‘I tell you most solemnly,
unless a man is born from above,
he cannot see the kingdom of God.’
Nicodemus said, ‘How can a grown man be born? Can he go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?’ Jesus replied:
‘I tell you most solemnly,
unless a man is born through water and the Spirit,
he cannot enter the kingdom of God:
what is born of the flesh is flesh;
what is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Do not be surprised when I say:
You must be born from above.
The wind blows wherever it pleases;
you hear its sound,
but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going.
That is how it is with all who are born of the Spirit.’
Reflection
In John 3:1-8, Jesus invites Nicodemus—and us—into a mystery deeper than physical birth: the birth from above, from the Spirit. Jesus points to a transformation that isn’t earned by human effort but initiated by God’s life-giving Spirit. Just as the wind moves unseen and alters what it touches, the Spirit reshapes our desires, loyalties, and identity. This inward new birth reorients us toward the kingdom of God, not by merit or ritual, but by open-hearted surrender to God’s work in us. The passage invites humility: we don’t control the Spirit’s movement, yet we are invited to receive it, to trust in God’s promise of new life, and to live as people renewed by grace.
Reflection Question
In what area of your life is the Spirit inviting you to a deeper, life-giving transformation, and how might you respond with trust and openness today?
Prayer
Gracious God, thank You for the gift of new birth by Your Spirit. Help me to trust the wind of Your presence, even when I cannot see where it comes from or where it goes. Renew my heart, soften my will, and align my life with Your kingdom. May I experience the truth that what is born of the Spirit is spirit, and live as a child of Your grace. Through Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.
