Gospel
John 6:30-35
It is my Father who gives you the bread from heaven
The people said to Jesus, ‘What sign will you give to show us that we should believe in you? What work will you do? Our fathers had manna to eat in the desert; as scripture says: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’
Jesus answered:
‘I tell you most solemnly,
it was not Moses who gave you bread from heaven,
it is my Father who gives you the bread from heaven,
the true bread;
for the bread of God
is that which comes down from heaven
and gives life to the world.’
‘Sir,’ they said ‘give us that bread always.’ Jesus answered:
‘I am the bread of life.
He who comes to me will never be hungry;
he who believes in me will never thirst.’
Reflection
In this passage, Jesus redirects the crowd’s search for a miraculous sign toward the deeper reality of God’s provision. The true sign is not Moses’ manna, but God’s own gift of bread from heaven that gives life to the world.
Jesus identifies Himself with the bread of life: He is the Source of spiritual nourishment that satisfies the deepest hunger of the heart, not merely physical hunger.
The invitation is intimate and personal: come to Jesus, believe in Him, and you will never hunger or thirst in the sense of true, lasting fulfillment.
This reflects a shift from outward works to a relationship with Christ. The Father’s initiative provides sustenance that sustains us for eternal life.
As we listen, we are challenged to examine what “bread” we seek to satisfy us today. Are we chasing temporary satisfies, or placing our trust in the life-giving presence of Christ?
Reflection Question
What in my life am I turning to for nourishment, and how can I deepen my trust in Jesus as the bread of life who satisfies beyond the immediate?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you are the bread of life who sustains my soul. Help me to turn away from shallow satisfactions and to come to you with faith. Fill me with your Spirit so that I may never hunger for what does not truly nourish. May I find my life in you today and forever. Amen.
