Gospel
John 6:16-21
They saw Jesus walking on the lake
In the evening the disciples went down to the shore of the lake and got into a boat to make for Capernaum on the other side of the lake. It was getting dark by now and Jesus had still not rejoined them. The wind was strong, and the sea was getting rough. They had rowed three or four miles when they saw Jesus walking on the lake and coming towards the boat. This frightened them, but he said, ‘It is I. Do not be afraid.’ They were for taking him into the boat, but in no time it reached the shore at the place they were making for.
Reflection
In the midst of darkness and fear, Jesus appears where they least expect him, walking on the water and gently saying, “It is I. Do not be afraid.” The disciples’ instinct was to cling to safety, yet Jesus invites them to trust beyond sight—into the possibility that the one who calms storms is present with them in the night. When they respond with fear, Jesus meets them with reassurance and a direct invitation to trust his presence and sovereignty, even when the path ahead seems windy and unclear. Our own storms can become moments of encounter, where faith is stretched not by avoiding danger, but by choosing to fix our eyes on Jesus who walks beside us.
Reflection Question
In what area of your life are you most aware of Jesus’ presence calming your fears right now, and how might you respond differently this week to invite deeper trust?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for drawing close in the storms of life and for Your steady voice that says, “It is I. Do not be afraid.” Help me to anchor my heart in Your presence, to trust Your timing, and to follow Your lead even when the waves rise. Teach me to seek Your calm over quick safety, and to recognize Your nearness when I am most scared. May my faith grow as I keep my eyes on You, the One who walks with me through every darkness. Amen.
