Gospel
John 6:52-59
My flesh is real food and my blood is real drink
The Jews started arguing with one another: ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ they said. Jesus replied:
‘I tell you most solemnly,
if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood,
you will not have life in you.
Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood
has eternal life,
and I shall raise him up on the last day.
For my flesh is real food
and my blood is real drink.
He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood
lives in me
and I live in him.
As I, who am sent by the living Father,
myself draw life from the Father,
so whoever eats me will draw life from me.
This is the bread come down from heaven;
not like the bread our ancestors ate:
they are dead,
but anyone who eats this bread will live for ever.’
He taught this doctrine at Capernaum, in the synagogue.
**Reflection**
In this passage, Jesus invites us into a radically intimate union: to eat his flesh and drink his blood is to participate in the life of Jesus himself. The language is startling, yet it reveals a profound truth about the nourishment that sustains faith. What Jesus offers is not metaphorical symbolism but a concrete, ongoing encounter with him—spiritual life that feeds our deepest longing for meaning, purpose, and eternal connection with the Father. When we receive this nourishment, we are drawn into relationship: we live in Christ, and he lives in us. This daily, humble surrender to the presence of Christ becomes the breath that sustains us, just as physical bread sustains our bodies. The contrast with the manna of old reminds us that true sustenance comes from Jesus—the eternal bread that gives life that cannot perish. May we accept his invitation with openness, allowing his life to permeate every part of us, from our thoughts and choices to our relationships and hopes for the future.
**Reflection Question**
- How can I cultivate a deeper, more sustaining awareness of Christ living in me in ordinary moments of daily life?
**Prayer**
Lord Jesus, you are the true bread come down from heaven. Feed my heart with your life, that I may trust you more deeply and reflect your love in all I do. Help me to feast on you with humility and faith, so that your life flows through me to others. May I sense your presence in the ordinary, and may my choices be shaped by your love. Draw me into constant union with you, now and forever. Amen.
