Matthew 8:23-27
Jesus rebuked the winds and the seas, and all was calm
Jesus got into the boat followed by his disciples. Without warning a storm broke over the lake, so violent that the waves were breaking right over the boat. But he was asleep. So they went to him and woke him saying, ‘Save us, Lord, we are going down!’ And he said to them, ‘Why are you so frightened, you men of little faith?’ And with that he stood up and rebuked the winds and the sea; and all was calm again. The men were astounded and said, ‘Whatever kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey him.’
Reflection
- This passage challenges the Sadducees’ understanding of life after death by highlighting that God is the God of the living. Jesus points to the continuity of relationship with God beyond death, where the power of God transforms our present assumptions and enlarges our hope. The key insight is that Scripture reveals the reality of life fullness in God, not merely a continuation of earthly patterns. The resurrection reorients our human categories (marriage, status) toward a transcendent destiny where we are made whole in God’s presence, like the angels, in a living relationship with Him.
Reflection Question
- How does the promise of the living God reshape the way you view your daily priorities, relationships, and hopes for the future?
Prayer
- Lord, open my heart to the truth that You are the God of the living. Help me to trust in the resurrection power that transcends my familiar patterns and fears. Ground me in Your eternal life today, so that I may live with hopeful obedience and share that hope with others. Amen.
