Matthew 8:28-34
The Gadarene swine
When Jesus reached the country of the Gadarenes on the other side of the lake, two demoniacs came towards him out of the tombs – creatures so fierce that no one could pass that way. They stood there shouting, ‘What do you want with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torture us before the time?’ Now some distance away there was a large herd of pigs feeding, and the devils pleaded with Jesus, ‘If you cast us out, send us into the herd of pigs.’ And he said to them, ‘Go then’, and they came out and made for the pigs; and at that the whole herd charged down the cliff into the lake and perished in the water. The swineherds ran off and made for the town, where they told the whole story, including what had happened to the demoniacs. At this the whole town set out to meet Jesus; and as soon as they saw him they implored him to leave the neighbourhood.
Reflection on Luke 8:28-34 – The Gadarene Swine (Gospel for July 1)
- Jesus encounters powerful forces of fear and oppression, yet responds with mercy and authority. The demoniacs are freed, not punished, revealing Jesus’ mission to heal what binds us.
- The townspeople’ fear and bewilderment give way to a mixed response: welcome healed freedom or retreat from disruption. Jesus’ presence unsettles comfortable margins and invites conversion.
- The stripping away of the demonic influence shows that “torture” and bondage lose their grip when faced with Jesus. Liberation often requires trust, humility, and a letting-go of familiar control.
- The image of the herd rushing into the lake signals that true healing sometimes overturns what we deem stable or profitable. Freedom may demand a change of heart, risk, and reliance on Jesus’ sovereignty.
- The miraculous deliverance invites us to examine what in our own lives binds us—fear, guilt, addictions, prejudices—and to invite Jesus to guide us toward wholeness.
Jesus brings liberation to what seems most untamable in us; true peace comes through surrender to His mercy.
Reflection question
- In what area of your life do you need Jesus’ healing authority to bring liberation and restoration?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the mercy and power of Jesus, who sets us free from what binds us. Help me to trust Your transforming work, to release what controls me, and to follow Jesus more closely. May Your peace settle in the deepest places of my heart, and may I bear witness to Your liberating love. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
