Gospel
John 6:51-58
My flesh is real food and my blood is real drink
Jesus said to the crowd:
‘I am the living bread which has come down from heaven.
Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever;
and the bread that I shall give is my flesh,
for the life of the world.’
Then the Jews started arguing with one another: ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ they said. Jesus replied:
‘I tell you most solemnly,
if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood,
you will not have life in you.
Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood
has eternal life,
and I shall raise him up on the last day.
For my flesh is real food
and my blood is real drink.
He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood
lives in me
and I live in him.
As I, who am sent by the living Father,
myself draw life from the Father,
so whoever eats me will draw life from me.
This is the bread come down from heaven;
not like the bread our ancestors ate:
they are dead,
but anyone who eats this bread will live for ever.’
**Reflection**
- This passage invites us to perceive the Eucharist as more than a symbol: Jesus presents Himself as the living bread that sustains eternal life. To eat His flesh and drink His blood is to enter into a union with Him so intimate that His life becomes our life. It challenges us to trust in a divine provision that transcends ordinary nourishment and to recognize that true life comes not from physical sustenance alone, but from communion with Christ who gives Himself for the world.
- The invitation is counter-cultural and demanding: accepting this bread requires faith, surrender, and a daily choosing to be united with Christ. When we receive Him, we are drawn into the life of the Father; our identity is reoriented from self-reliance to reliance on the grace that comes through Christ.
- In a world focused on quick fixes and surface-level fulfillment, this passage calls us to deeper hunger—for holiness, for God, and for the life that only Jesus can give. It reassures us that in Him there is lasting life, even when earthly life passes away.
Question for reflection
- How does receiving the Eucharist shape the way I live each day, especially in moments of doubt or hardship?
Prayer
Heavenly Father,Thank you for the gift of your Son, the living bread that gives true life. Help me to approach the Eucharist with reverence and faith, to be united with Christ in every moment, and to carry His life into the world with love and humility. May my hunger for you grow stronger than any earthly desire, and may I always trust that in you I find eternal life. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
